Fiction
I was recently perusing reviews on Goodreads for a book that I recently read. No, it wasn't for one of my books. (Really! I promise) Although, I've read similar comments for books I've written.
All right, the point of this post isn't about people's inability to round numbers(3.5 stars should be 4 stars). It is to share a definition I feel some readers have forgotten.
The word in question is FICTION.
fic·tion
ˈfikSHən/Submit
noun
literature in the form of prose, especially short stories and novels, that describes imaginary events and people.
invention or fabrication as opposed to fact.
plural noun: fictions
"he dismissed the allegation as absolute fiction"
synonyms: fabrication, invention, lies, fibs, untruth, falsehood, fantasy, nonsense More
antonyms: fact
The reviews I read mentioned that they, the reader, gave a lower rating because the storyline, or in some cases a character's development arc was unrealistic.
Really???? Please, before you are disappointed in a story check out the genre!
The book I read, as well as the books I've written, are classified as FICTION! The book I read is in a subcategory of ROMANCE. Romantic Fiction! My books are categorized as Romantic Thriller Fiction.
Are you seeing a pattern?
Many people, including myself, read to be taken away from real life. We read to escape and experience instances that will more than likely never occur within our real lives.
IF you want to read realistic situations, may I recommend NON-FICTION? There are some amazing NON-Fiction books.
However, to discount a fictitious story because it is indeed FICTION is ridiculous and very annoying to those of us who do in fact know the definition.
This is solely my opinion. I mean, if you'd like me to write about doing laundry and driving my children to soccer practice I can do that.
If you want to read about hot men, amazing surroundings, and twisted wild scenarios, then I recommend you stick with fiction.
Because for most of us, as my husband pointed out, the pizza delivery man is not a super stud who is really a billionaire waiting to take you away from laundry and provide you with a driver for soccer practice.
The choice is yours. If you chose Fiction...recognize that is exactly what you're going to get!!
